This blog was originally started to better help me understand the technologies in the CCIE R&S blueprint; after completing the R&S track I have decided to transition the blog into a technology blog.

CCIE #29033

This blog will continue to include questions, troubleshooting scenarios, and references to existing and new technologies but will grow to include a variety of different platforms and technologies. Currently I have created over 185 questions/answers in regards to the CCIE R&S track!! Note: answers are in the comment field or within "Read More" section.

What is SSM?

SSM - Source Specific Multicast supports one to many applications also referred to as broadcast applications. SSM uses (S, G) (Source, Mcast Group) channels which hosts subscribe to or unsubscribe from, the receiver specifies which source it receives from as opposed to just joining a multicast group. This reduces the complexity of routing multicast. This is similar to a channel on your television(SSM specifies a multicast IP address and a source or list of source IP addresses with which it would like to subscribe from). When running SSM with IGMPv3 the host, router, and application must support IGMPv3. There are two technologies that can be used to support SSM when IGMPv3 is not available these include IGMP v3lite and URD. (In this post I will not be expanding on these technologies)

SSM requires the following technologies:

PIM - Protocol Independent Multicast - used to communicate multicast information throughout the network. Two modes Dense and Sparse. SSM can only use Sparse Mode.

IGMPv3 Internet Group Management Protocol- SSM support is available in IGMPv3 and not available in previous versions of IGMP. IGMP is used by a hosts or routers to establish multicast group membership. (IGMP v3lite or URD can be used and interoperate with each other as well as IGMPv3. Note: MLDv2 is used in IPv6)

Global Config
"ip pim ssm default" or "ip pim ssm range (acl#)"

Interface Config
"ip igmp version 3" or "ip igmp v3lite" or "ip urd"
