This blog was originally started to better help me understand the technologies in the CCIE R&S blueprint; after completing the R&S track I have decided to transition the blog into a technology blog.

What is DTP and how can you disable it?

DTP - Dynamic Trunking Protocol - is used to negotiate trunking capabilities and encapsulation methods. Cisco proprietary.

Interface configuration command
"switchport nonnegotiate"

DTP modes
Auto - This listens for frames and will negotiate trunk as longs as the other end is set to desirable or on.
Desirable - Actively sends out requests to form a trunk. Will negotiate a trunk as long as the other end is desirable, auto, or on.
On - Sets the trunk to permanent trunking even if the other side does not agree.
Nonegotiate - DTP is disabled
Off - Disables trunking
